Wavve is an OTT company that has been consistently producing its own queer content. In 2022, Wavve gained attention by releasing “His Man,” a dating reality show for men and “Merry Queer,” which features the daily lives of various queer couples living together. “His Man” has already reached its third season in 2024, and Wavve continues to produce queer content, such as “Just Family,” which tells the story of a married Korean lesbian couple and their child, Rani. In this edition, we will briefly introduce Wavve’s queer content.
“His Man” is a dating show where male participants live together in a shared house, getting to know each other. As of 2024, the third season is airing. You can find interesting information about each episode on Twitter at @gay__zip. The participants’ Instagram accounts are also publicly available online. Given its international popularity as a Wavve original, one of the show’s biggest strengths is the abundance of information available on the internet, allowing viewers to engage with the content in various ways.
Merry Queer is a program that tells the stories of three queer couples. One couple, consisting of two men who are also YouTubers, travels to New York to register their marriage since same-sex marriage is not legalized in Korea. A female-female couple prepares for their wedding in Korea, while a transgender man and a bisexual woman go through the gender transition process together. The panel, made up of a famous Korean entertainer, a female idol, and Hong Seokcheon, who was the first celebrity in the Korean entertainment industry to come out as gay after being outed, observes and discusses the daily lives of these couples, gradually understanding them. Hong Seokcheon also meets the couples in person and supports them as a senior in the queer community.
Just Family features the everyday lives of a married Korean lesbian couple who recently had a child named “Rani” (Twitter: @kyugenius) and a gay couple also known as YouTubers “Mango Couple.” The show includes various panelists observing and discussing the couples’ experiences. The panelists come from diverse backgrounds, including a family of four, a doctor, a religious figure, a foreigner, queer individuals, and the parents of queer individuals. These groups bring different opinions and perspectives, sometimes debating, empathizing, or even changing their views as they watch the couples welcome Rani and build their futures. We look forward to the changes Rani will bring and the world changing as they welcome Rani.
